Things People Say Way Too Often in Our Curvy Bridal Boutique

Running a plus-size bridal boutique means we’ve heard just about everything. From curious walk-ins to well-meaning (but misguided) designers, the things people say to us could fill a whole book. So today, we’re pulling back the curtain for a little peek into life at Ivory & Main, where the gowns are gorgeous, the brides are fabulous, and the commentary? Well, let’s just say it keeps us entertained.

“Hi, I’m a designer, and your boutique is beautiful! I’d love to show you our collection. It goes up to a size 16.”

Our response:

Size 16? Who exactly is that, fitting, sweetie?

Here’s the thing: being a bridal boutique means we get visits from designers all the time. And while we love discovering new collections, it’s always a bit of a head-scratcher when someone proudly announces that their line “goes up to a 16.”

At Ivory & Main, we celebrate real size inclusivity, and that means gowns that go up to at least a size 24 (and ideally much higher). We’re still waiting for someone to explain why so many designers think a size 16 counts as “plus-size.” Spoiler alert: it doesn’t.

Inclusive sizing isn’t optional anymore; it’s essential. Brides deserve better, and we’ll always advocate for them until every designer gets the memo.

“Hi! I’m just going to look around. My friend’s nephew’s cousin’s sister’s girlfriend just got engaged and she’s... a little heavy.”

Who? I’m sorry, what now?

We’re flattered you thought of us… truly! But Ivory & Main is by appointment only. That means we need the actual bride present so we can help her find her dream dress.

If your friend-of-a-friend’s-neighbor’s-dog-walker just got engaged, we’d be happy to give you a card or a magazine to pass along! But unless the bride herself is ready to shop, we’ll have to keep those gorgeous gowns right where they are. Trust us, the magic happens when she’s here.

Wait… what did you think we’d look like? A flea market?

We hear this one a lot, and while we appreciate the compliment, it always makes us pause. Plus-size doesn’t mean “less than,” and it certainly doesn’t mean “frumpy.”

Our boutique is a beautiful, modern bridal experience — clean, curated, and filled with stunning gowns that actually fit. We take pride in creating a space where every bride feels celebrated from the moment she walks through our doors. Because every bride deserves that. Period.

Our stylists are absolute pros at fitting sample gowns so you can see how the dress will look in your actual size. We’ve got tricks, tools, and a whole lot of experience to make sure you can envision the final fit perfectly.

And just between us? Those clips might be our most underrated bridal accessory.
