The Curvy Girl’s Guide to Transitioning Your Wardrobe from Summer to Fall

Row of colorful clothes on wooden hangers in a boutique, including denim, yellow, pink, white, and olive garments.

September has arrived, which means we're entering that magical time of year when you can walk outside in the morning and think, “Oh, it's definitely fall!” only to be sweating by lunchtime.

Welcome to the in-between season.

The good news? You don't need to pack away your entire summer wardrobe and replace it with a closet full of sweaters overnight.

In fact, some of your favorite summer pieces can work beautifully well into fall. The trick is all about layering, styling, and getting creative with what you already own.

Here's how to transition your wardrobe from summer to fall without completely starting over.

1. Don't Put Your Dresses Away Just Yet

One of the easiest ways to transition into fall is to keep wearing your favorite summer dresses.

That flowy maxi you've been living in? Keep it.

That midi dress you wore to every summer event? Keep it.

Your favorite little sundress? We're not done with her yet.

Add a denim jacket, cardigan, blazer, or lightweight sweater and suddenly that summer dress has a whole new personality.

Then add ankle boots or sneakers instead of sandals and you've got an outfit that feels much more fall-ready.

Try this: Summer dress + denim jacket + ankle boots = instant fall outfit.

Easy. Comfortable. Zero closet panic required.

2. Layer Like Your Life Depends on It

Fall fashion is basically an excuse to wear more clothes at once.

And honestly? We're here for it.

Start with your summer staples and add layers as the weather cools down.

Think:

  • Tank top + cardigan

  • T-shirt + blazer

  • Dress + denim jacket

  • Camisole + oversized button-down

  • Short-sleeve top + lightweight jacket

  • Jumpsuit + cozy sweater

Layering also gives you the ability to adjust throughout the day.

Cold in the morning? Add a layer.

Hot at noon? Take it off.

Freezing because your office apparently thinks it's January? Put it back on.

Fall fashion: solving temperature problems one layer at a time.

3. Your Jeans Are About to Become Your Best Friend Again

Summer tends to be all about dresses, shorts, skirts, and lightweight fabrics.

But fall? Bring on the denim.

This is the perfect time to pull out your favorite jeans and start pairing them with those summer tops you've been wearing all season.

A bright blouse that feels very “summer” can look completely different with dark denim and ankle boots.

A basic tank becomes a fall outfit when you add a cardigan and jeans. Don't feel like you have to stick to one specific jean silhouette. Skinny, straight-leg, wide-leg, flare, boyfriend, cropped, we say wear the ones you actually like.

4. Keep Wearing Color

Fall fashion doesn't mean your entire wardrobe has to suddenly become black, brown, beige, and gray.

We LOVE a good fall neutral, but we're also big fans of color.

That bright pink blouse? Wear it.

The cobalt blue top? Absolutely.

Your favorite floral dress? Pair it with boots and a jacket.

Want to wear orange before Halloween? Go for it.

Your wardrobe doesn't have to change personalities just because the calendar says September.

Try mixing your summer colors with traditional fall shades for a look that feels seasonal without being predictable.

Think:

  • Pink + chocolate brown

  • Blue + camel

  • Green + cream

  • Orange + denim

  • Burgundy + blush

Fall is a season, not a dress code.

5. Swap Your Accessories Before You Swap Your Entire Wardrobe

Sometimes the easiest way to make an outfit feel more fall is simply changing the accessories.

  • Swap your sandals for boots.

  • Trade your straw bag for a structured handbag.

  • Add a scarf.

  • Grab a belt.

  • Throw on a hat.

  • Change your jewelry.

Suddenly that same outfit you've been wearing all summer feels completely different.

That's one of our favorite things about transitional dressing:

You don't always need new clothes. Sometimes you just need new combinations.

6. Start Bringing Out the Sweaters…But Don't Go Full Winter Yet

We know.

The second September hits, some of you are READY for chunky sweaters, fuzzy socks, and pumpkin everything.

We respect the enthusiasm. But let's maybe hold off on the heaviest knits until Mother Nature gets the memo.

Instead, start with lightweight sweaters and cardigans. They're perfect for throwing over dresses, tanks, tees, and camisoles without making you feel like you're wearing a blanket in 75-degree weather.

If you're shopping for fall pieces, look for sweaters you can layer and style multiple ways.

That's going to give you a lot more mileage out of your wardrobe.

7. Don't Forget Your Jumpsuits and Rompers

Just because summer is ending doesn't mean your favorite jumpsuit has to go into hibernation. Add a cardigan, blazer, denim jacket, or even a fitted long-sleeve top underneath it. Then finish the outfit with boots or sneakers.

Rompers can work too, especially when paired with tights, boots, and a jacket once the weather really starts cooling down.

One piece. A couple of layers. Completely different season.

That's the beauty of transitional dressing.

Your Summer-to-Fall Wardrobe Checklist

Before you go shopping for an entirely new wardrobe, take a look at what you already have.

Pull out:

  • Summer dresses

  • Lightweight tops

  • Jumpsuits

  • Jeans

  • Cardigans

  • Denim jackets

  • Lightweight blazers

  • Ankle boots

  • Fall accessories

  • Your favorite pieces that make you feel amazing

Then start experimenting.

Layer. Mix. Match. Add boots. Change your accessories. Play with color.

You might be surprised by how many “fall” outfits are already hiding in your closet.

And when you do need a few new pieces? That's where we come in.
