The Best Thrift Finds for Fall (Yes, You Should Start Looking Now!)

Smiling woman poses on a brick step outside a blue storefront, wearing an olive top and star-print jeans beside potted flowers.

We know…It’s August.

You’re still wearing sandals. You may still be sweating the second you step outside. You are absolutely not emotionally prepared to hear the words “pumpkin spice.”

But hear us out…

August is actually one of the best times to start thrifting for fall.

If you wait until the first chilly morning to start hunting for your fall wardrobe, you’re going to be competing with everyone else who suddenly remembers they need sweaters, boots, jackets, and jeans.

Thrifting takes a little patience. You’re not walking into a store with 37 identical sweaters in every size and color. You’re hunting for the good stuff. When you find that jacket or the perfect pair of boots or the denim that actually makes you feel like yourself… You realize it's totally worth it.

So while everyone else is squeezing the last bit of summer out of their wardrobe, we’re already thinking about the best fall thrift finds.

Here’s what we’re looking for.

1. Jackets: Your Fall Outfit MVP

If there’s one thing we recommend starting your fall thrift hunt early for, it’s a jacket.

Why? Because a good jacket can completely transform an outfit.

Throw one over a graphic tee and jeans. Add one to a dress. Wear it over a sweater when the weather gets actually cold. Suddenly, you have an entirely different look without buying an entirely different wardrobe.

Thrift racks are GOLD for jackets.

Look for:

August is a great time to start looking because you can be picky. You’re not desperately searching for something to keep you warm tomorrow morning. You can take your time finding the jacket you actually love.

That's the whole point of thrifting.

2. Sweaters: Yes, We’re Going There

We promise we're not trying to rush summer, but sweaters are one of those things you should start looking for before you actually need one.

Because the best sweaters don't always show up when you want them to.

Thrift racks can be especially fun for sweaters because you can find everything from classic neutrals to vintage patterns to weird little gems you never would have thought to look for.

And don't automatically skip something because it looks too basic on the rack. A great oversized sweater can become a fall wardrobe workhorse.

Pair it with denim. Wear it over a dress. Tuck it into a skirt. Layer it over a button-down. Add boots and suddenly you're ready for apple-picking season, even if you still have the air conditioner blasting.

When thrifting for sweaters, pay attention to the details: fabric quality, stretch, condition, and how it fits through the shoulders and arms.

3. Denim: The Hunt Is Worth It

We will never stop talking about good denim. Finding jeans that fit well, feel good, and actually make you want to wear them? That is a THRIFTING VICTORY.

Denim is also one of those categories where secondhand shopping can be particularly fun because you can find different washes, cuts, rises, and styles that aren't always easy to find in mainstream stores.

Keep an eye out for:

And don't get too hung up on the size on the tag.

Vintage sizing can be wildly different from today's sizing, and different brands fit differently anyway.

Try it on. That's the only way to know.

The perfect pair might be hiding under a size you normally wouldn't even pick up.

4. Boots: Before Everyone Else Remembers They Need Them

Boots are another fall staple you should absolutely start hunting for now.

Because when the temperatures finally drop, you’re going to see everyone searching for the same thing: A cute pair of boots.

Thrifting gives you the opportunity to find something a little different from what’s sitting on every department store shelf.

Look for:

  • Ankle boots

  • Knee-high boots

  • Chunky boots

  • Statement boots

  • Boots in unexpected colors or textures

Because thrifted footwear can vary so much in availability and sizing, starting early gives you more time to find the pair. You know the ones. The boots you immediately start imagining with jeans, dresses, skirts, leggings, and basically everything else in your closet.

Those boots.

Why Start Fall Thrifting in August?

If you wait until September or October to think about your fall wardrobe, you're going to be shopping with a deadline.

Start in August, and you can build your fall wardrobe slowly.

Maybe you’ll find a jacket this week. A great pair of boots next week. A sweater two weeks later.

Then suddenly, the weather changes and you're sitting there with an entire fall wardrobe you didn't have to panic-buy.

You're not just buying clothes. You're building a wardrobe.

The Curvy Girl Fall Thrift Strategy

If you're shopping secondhand for fall, here's our advice: Start with the pieces you know you'll wear.

Don't buy something just because it's a great deal.

Ask yourself:

  • Would I actually wear this?

  • Can you think of at least three outfits you could make with it?

  • Does it fit comfortably?

  • Is it in good condition?

  • Does it work with the clothes you already own?

And most importantly…

Do you LOVE it?

Because a $10 sweater isn't a good deal if it sits in the back of your closet untouched.

A $20 jacket you wear 30 times? Now that's a thrift find.

Don't Wait for Fall to Start Shopping for Fall

August might still feel like summer and that's okay. Keep wearing your sundresses. Keep enjoying your sandals. Keep living your best summer life.

But while you're at it, start keeping an eye out for those fall pieces.

Because the best thrift finds aren't always the ones you went looking for, sometimes they're the jacket you spot on a random Tuesday or the boots you weren't expecting to find, or the sweater that looks boring on the rack but becomes your favorite thing to throw on.

That's the magic of thrifting. You never quite know what you're going to find. That's exactly why you should start looking now.
