5 Bridal Appointment Myths We’re Busting This Summer

Summer is prime bridal shopping season. The weddings are happening, the Pinterest boards are overflowing, and suddenly everyone has an opinion about how you’re “supposed” to find your wedding dress.
You’ll hear things like, “You should lose a little weight before you shop,” or “You need to bring your entire bridal party,” or “You’ll KNOW it’s the one because you’ll cry.”
Respectfully… who made these rules?!
At Ivory & Main, we think bridal shopping should be about finding a dress that makes you feel like yourself, not checking a list of imaginary requirements before you’re allowed to enjoy the experience.
So this summer, we’re busting some of the biggest bridal appointment myths.
Myth #1: You Need to Lose Weight Before Your Appointment
Absolutely not.
Your body does not need to change before you’re allowed to shop for your wedding dress.
We know this myth can be especially loud for plus-size brides. You may have heard that you should “wait until you’re closer to your wedding” or “lose weight first so you know what size you’ll be.”
But here’s the thing: your wedding dress shopping experience should happen with the body you have today.

And if your body changes between your appointment and your wedding day? That’s okay, too. Bodies change. Dresses can be altered (to an extent). Your worth was never tied to a number on a size tag.
You deserve to shop for your dress now, not after you’ve “earned it”.
Myth #2: You Need a Huge Entourage
Your cousin. Your aunt. Your future mother-in-law. Your college roommate. Your three bridesmaids. Your childhood best friend. Your neighbor who has “excellent fashion sense.”
Suddenly your bridal appointment looks like a group field trip.
You do not need a huge entourage to find your dress.
In fact, bringing too many opinions into the room can sometimes make the experience harder.
Your bridal appointment should include people who make you feel supported, comfortable, and confident. That might mean your mom and sister. Your best friend. Your partner. Or maybe just you.
There is no prize for having the biggest bridal entourage.
Bring the people whose opinions you actually want, not the people you feel obligated to invite.
And remember: you are the one wearing the dress.
Myth #3: You Have to Cry
This one needs to go directly into the bridal myth trash can.
You do not have to cry when you find your wedding dress.
Some brides cry. Some laugh. Some stare at themselves in the mirror and say, “OH. This is IT.”
Some brides feel calm. Some feel excited. Some feel absolutely nothing dramatic in the moment and realize later that they can’t stop thinking about the dress.
All of those reactions are normal.
There is no magical bridal alarm that goes off when the “right” dress is on your body. If you don’t immediately burst into tears, it does not mean you picked the wrong dress.
Sometimes finding your dress feels less like a movie moment and more like:
“Wait… I really, really like this.”
And honestly? That’s enough.

Myth #4: You Need to Try on 40 Dresses
There is a weird idea that you haven’t really shopped until you’ve tried on approximately 900 wedding dresses.
Nope.
Some brides find their dress on the first appointment. Others need to try on several different silhouettes before they know what they want.
There is no magic number.
Trying on more dresses does not automatically mean you’ll make a better decision. Sometimes it just means you’ve completely overwhelmed yourself.

Myth #5: You Have to Know Your Dress Style Before You Shop
A-Line? Ballgown? Mermaid? Fit-and-flare? Sheath? What does any of that even mean?!
If you already know exactly what you want, fantastic.
If you have absolutely no idea? Also fantastic.
Your bridal appointment is part of the discovery process.
You might walk in convinced you want a fitted gown and walk out obsessed with a ballgown. You might think you hate sleeves until you try on the right one. You might have saved 47 dresses on Pinterest and discover that your favorites all have something completely different in common.
That’s why trying on gowns is so helpful.
You don't have to arrive with a perfectly curated vision board and a five-year plan for your neckline.
Come curious.

You really only need a few things:
An open mind.
People who support you.
A willingness to try something new.
To give yourself permission to enjoy the experience exactly as you are.
Summer bridal season is busy enough without adding a bunch of made-up rules to your appointment.
