When to Start Shopping for Your Wedding Dress (and Why You Shouldn’t Wait Until the Last Minute)

Bride in a white gown smiles in a boutique. Two women on a couch hold signs. Ornate mirror reflects her joy. Elegant decor surrounds.

One of the most exciting parts of wedding planning is saying yes to your dream dress—but timing is everything. At Ivory & Main, we want every curvy bride to have access to the full range of designers, styles, and customization options that make your bridal look truly yours.

So… when should you start shopping? Here’s the short answer:

about 12–14 months before your wedding date.

Why Start a Year in Advance?

Designers create gowns to order, which means the dress you fall in love with will be made specifically for you. This process can take anywhere from several months to almost a year, depending on the designer, level of detail, and customizations.

Shopping early means:

  • Access to all designers – Many brands have longer lead times, and starting a year out ensures you can choose from every collection.

  • Plenty of time for alterations – Your dress will likely need some fine-tuning to fit your curves perfectly, and we want every stitch to be just right.

  • Zero stress – Wedding planning is already a lot... knowing your gown is handled means one less thing to worry about.

The Risks of Waiting Too Long

If you start shopping less than a year before your wedding, your options may be more limited. Some designers won’t be able to meet shorter timelines, which means you might have to choose from in-stock gowns or certain collections only.

That being said, we can work with shorter timelines—but it’s crucial to tell your stylist when booking your appointment. This way, we can tailor your shopping experience to focus on gowns that can be ready in time for your big day.

Pro Tip: Book Early, Celebrate Often

Even if your wedding feels far away, booking your appointment now means more time to celebrate the win of finding your dress! You’ll have months to plan accessories, hair, and makeup around your gown, and more moments to picture yourself walking down the aisle.

At Ivory & Main, our mission is to make every curvy bride feel confident, celebrated, and stress-free. Whether you’re a year away from your wedding or working on a shorter timeline, we’ll help you find the one—and make sure it’s ready for your big moment.

Ready to start your dress journey? Book your bridal appointment now and let’s make magic happen.
